CFP Certification - Retaining

Retaining CFP® Certification

As a CFP® professional, you have an obligation to ensure that your knowledge of financial planning continues to grow and remain current. To renew your license to use the CFP and its related marks, you must attest to having completed thirty (30) hours of approved Continuing Education (CE) courses every year.

Exemptions

Exemptions to CE requirements depend on the calendar year in which you wrote the CFP examination. Specifically:

  • Prior to 2004: You are exempt from CE requirements for one year from the date that you earn CFP certification.
  • 2004 and Following: You are exempt from CE requirements for two years from the date that you write the CFP examination.

You are also required to continue upholding the Code of Ethics, as well as the FPSC Practice Standards.

Finally, you must renew your certification on an annual basis.
