Career Recruitment

Secondary School Outreach

Description: Speak to secondary school students in classroom settings about the CFP credential, working in the financial planning industry, and / or about financial planning (ie. Goal setting, budgeting, credit, student loans, etc). Teachers sometimes offer topics / guidance for presentation content.

Visits are arranged by FPSC staff and / or by the volunteering CFP professional.

Time Commitment: Approximately 1 – 2 hours per classroom visit. Preparation for presentation varies between 1 – 3 hours.

College and University: Career recruitment

Description: Attend career fairs at colleges and universities to promote the CFP credential, and financial planning as a career. Responsibilities may include setting up the booth space, speaking with students and distributing FPSC marketing materials.

FPSC also fills requests from colleges and universities to organize presentations to classes about CFP certification. CFP professionals provide valuable dimension to these sessions, as they are expected to provide their experiences and observations of the finance industry.

Time Commitment: Events occur annually (often in September / October; January / February) and volunteers are asked to staff the FPSC booth for a minimum of 3 hours.

Online Career Centre

Description: Respond to e-mailed questions posed by candidates for CFP certification on our Career Centre. Questions are typically about working in the financial planning industry. These questions are vetted by FPSC.

The individual’s question and the planner’s response may be posted on the FPSC website in the CFP Candidates section under Career Centre.

Time Commitment: Experts are asked to commit to 6 months since questions from the public are infrequent. If the demand for responses increases, 4 month time commitments will be offered.

Public Relations

“Speaking of Money”: Financial Planning Seminars

Description: Speak to Canadians about the value of financial planning. Visit businesses, corporations, community groups, etc, to present financial planning information sessions.

Time Commitment: Presentations are usually 1-2 hours in length, although this can vary depending on the engagement. Preparation for the presentation varies from 1 – 3 hours.

Writing

Financial Planning and Practice Management Software Reviews

Description: Test and write reviews of software programs currently on the market that may be of interest to professional financial planners. Professional software reviews are posted on the FPSC website in the CFP Professionals section under Professional Knowledge Centre.

Time Commitment: Varies depending on the complexity of the program and its functions. Reviews are should be between 250-500 words. The number of software programs reviewed is at the discretion of the volunteer and based on FPSC need.
FPSC training required: While FPSC does not provide training, basic understanding of how to load software and negotiate its resources is expected. FPSC will provide a content and style guide and edit submissions for clarity and grammar.

Consumer Book Reviews

Description: Write a critical review of a financial planning-related book that is meant for consumers. Reviews will be posted on the FPSC website in the Public section under Learning Centre.

Time Commitment: Consumer financial planning books are 150-250 pages on average. The number of reviews written is at the discretion of the volunteer and is based on FPSC need.

Professional Book Reviews

Description: Write a critical review of a book written for financial services professionals.
Reviews will be posted on the FPSC website in the CFP Professionals section under Professional Knowledge Centre.

Time Commitment: Financial planning books written for industry professionals are 150-250 pages in length (on average) and often contain technical content that may require in-depth analysis. Reviews are expected to be between 250-500 words. The number of books reviewed is at the discretion of the volunteer and based on FPSC need.

Ask an Expert

Online “Ask an Expert”

Description: Respond to consumer questions (vetted by FPSC) about financial planning related topics. The consumer’s question and the planner’s response may be posted on the FPSC website in the Public section under CFP Candidates section under Ask An Expert.

Time Commitment: Experts are asked to commit to 6 months during which they may need to respond to approximately 10 questions.
