CFP® Professional Competency Profile

The Certified Financial Planner® Professional Competency Profile describes in detail the abilities that a CFP professional must possess, and represents the job-related skills, knowledge, attitudes and judgments required for competent performance by members of the financial planning profession. It will help everyone better understand both the purpose and value of professional financial planning. It distinguishes financial planning from other financial services, and it distinguishes the role and value proposition of the CFP professional from those of other advisors.

The Competency Profile Matrix is part of the Competency Profile document. The Matrix presents a graphical overview of the Competency Profile. CFP Examination candidates and CFP professionals alike will find it a useful guide in navigating the Competency Profile. Practicing CFP professionals are using the Matrix as a way to help their client's understand what professional financial planning is all about.

Candidates for the CFP Examination, CFP professionals and anyone else wanting an in-depth understanding of the underlying competencies of professional financial planning should print the PDF attachment. An HTML version is coming soon.

If you have questions about the new CFP Competency Profile, contact FPSC's Director, Professional and Student Affairs, Carolyn Fallis CA, CFP at cfallis@cfp-ca.org.
